Poker Hand Rankings

One of the most interesting aspects of poker is all the new things that you need to learn and keep in mind when you first begin to learn poker. And of these, one of the most difficult aspects is to remember not how to play the game, but to remember the different poker hand rankings.

I can just hear everyone who has played poker shouting at me for saying that, but I have to say that it is very simply the truth. Sure, when you first read up on, or look through and try to figure out the poker hand rankings for yourself they make sense. But this is only in the beginning.

I remember being very pleased with myself after I figured out and understood what all the different hand rankings meant. But then I had to put it aside for a few weeks and when I got back to it, I was certain that I would be playing poker in time flat, seeing as how I had managed to figure out what the various poker hand rankings were.

The glitch came not then even, because it still made sense to me, but when I began to play. Suddenly I was thrust into the middle of a real live poker game, with people on either side of me – so alright, they were animated figures, but at the time they were real enough – and I was waiting to be posted into the Big Blind.

When my turn came up, I was dealt my two cards (I was playing Texas Holdem), and looked in complete bemusement at my cards. I had a pair of cards in my hand and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with them. Did I want to call, or raise or fold? Were the two cards (I can’t remember what they were), enough of a good hand for me to have a chance at getting the pot?

At that point, all the poker hand rankings that I had gone through and learnt were of no use to me. When push came to shove in the real games, I was unable to remember which hands were good and which ones weren’t as good. The only one that I truly remembered was that of a Royal Flush, and I know I didn’t have an outside chance of getting one of those!

So back it was to my drawing board to get in some much needed practice in trying to figure out whether a Full House beat a Straight, or whether a Flush was better than Three of Kind! I learned my lesson though.

Instead of glibly believing that I would be able to remember the various poker hand rankings when I began to play, I instead utilized a much underrated method of remembering them: I practiced, day and night whenever I could wherever I could taking a pack of cards along with me so that I would always have something to do.

Online Poker – How Is It Possible To Cheat At Online Poker?

No matter how hard you try to get away from it, there will always be someone in the field who wants to cheat at whatever it is they are doing. Poker Rules – Which Ones Do You Need To Learn?

It’s not an easy thing, this game of poker. For many newcomers to the game, it can seem daunting and even a little tiresome at times when you have to remember all the official poker rules and regulations as well as learning the different poker hand combinations.

Luckily for you, it is not entirely necessary to learn the handbook of official poker rules by heart. It will normally be enough that you know most of them loosely, or that you know them through experience at playing poker.

Besides which, you will find that unless you are playing a home game (in which case you won’t need the official poker rules at hand), you will be referring any and all disputes to the floor manager or other such official person to arbiter.

In these cases, although your knowledge of the official poker rules will come in handy for yourself, the last decision will be made by the arbiter and not by yourself. The main thing that you need to know in these cases of the official poker rules is that you need to abide by the arbitration given at the time.

If there is a discrepancy in the arbitration, you will find that there is also a rule in the official poker rules book for this contingency as well. Of course, poker rules do change from game to game, and from place to place, so it can be a good thing if you know exactly where you stand on this front, but some things you will find, are universal.

The one place where there really is a uniform book containing the official poker rules, is during championship games such the World Series of Poker. In these types of games, the rule book is the last word and all arbitrations etc. need to be referred to this. All arbiters of these games need to be well versed with the official poker rules, in order to properly oversee the game.

Another thing that you will notice when playing poker is that not all of these official poker rules are defined in a cut and dried manner. Some of the rules are left up to the interpretation of the arbiter, and in some cases this can cause problems, but this doesn’t happen very often.

Just remember when you are learning to play poker, that although the official poker rules are an important part of the game, and that although you really should have at least a high level knowledge of them, they are not what you should be concentrating on.

After all, for one person to win, another person (or indeed the entire table of poker players) needs to lose. In case that wasn’t clear enough, there really is no particular method that you can use to win at poker. There are a number of combinations and factors, and there a number of circumstances which will go into making someone win at poker, but none of these will tell you exactly how to win at poker.

For instance, if someone won a pot with a starting hand of 9-7 spades, this does not mean that they will win the pot if they again get the same starting pair.

Besides having to rely on other factors such as the remaining three cards that person will get (or the table, in the case of Texas Holdem), he/ she will also have to factor in the number of players at the table, the strength and the weaknesses of the other players, and more crucially, whether or not someone else might have a better hand then he/ she does.

And that’s just for starters. Then there’s the element of luck involved in all gambling games, not only poker. Some people might argue over this thing called luck and say that it has no place when you’re trying to learn how to win at poker, but the truth of the matter is that there is always a small element of luck whenever you’re playing poker.

However, if we put aside luck for the moment and go with other factors which can help you to learn how to win at poker, the largest going concern we should take would be that of skill. This is practically the one and only way that you can be assured of winning the pot.

Without any skill you can be assured that you will lose the majority of your hands, and that for lack of anything resembling knowledge or experience of the game. What you really need to do is to practice as much as you can, learning your strengths and trying to deal with or eliminate entirely, your weaknesses.

It is only when you have mastered these skills that you will know how to win at poker, consistently, and also how to take defeat in your stride and make it into an eventual win by learning from it.

How To Play Texas Holdem Poker

When you are first learning how to play Texas Holdem poker however, you will not have to worry about any of these. The largest concern you should have is staying in the game without losing a large amount of your chips. Of course, for a new player this is an almost impossible task, but it always helps to keep this goal in mind.

With practice and experience at you fingertips you will be better able to defend your chips and to make the overall amount grow considerably; however, you will first need to learn how to play Texas Holdem poker.

And the best place to start is by learning what the different hands are, for poker. Since most poker games are five-card games, you are best off learning these card combinations to begin with.
